The Dissection

This paper is an audit of survey blindness. Standard questions measure whether a behavior is acceptable in isolation; role-reversed questions test whether the same rule survives a change in gender. Its real finding is that reported opposition to traditional gender roles is not evidence of genuine neutrality. The respondents’ work-and-family beliefs are doing more of the causal work than simple gender preference.

The Core Fallacy

Relative to the Discontinuity Thesis, the paper treats attitude symmetry as a meaningful endpoint while leaving the economic engine unexamined. It measures whether humans judge identical behavior consistently. It does not measure who owns AI capital, who controls productive systems, or whether human labor remains economically necessary.

Under P1–P3, a society can become perfectly gender-neutral while most people of both sexes lose access to economically necessary work. Cultural equality does not preserve productive participation. The paper sharpens the map of the waiting room while ignoring the factory floor being automated away.

Its finding could matter during the lag phase: inherited gender norms may influence who reaches ownership, control, or indispensable technical roles. But the supplied evidence does not test that channel.

Hidden Assumptions

  • Social acceptability reliably translates into behavior, institutional allocation, and economic outcomes.
  • Correcting gender attitudes can materially preserve or expand human choice once economic necessity changes.
  • Gender remains the central causal division rather than a legacy proxy for work, family, and status arrangements.
  • Paired-response differences represent stable social beliefs rather than context-sensitive judgments or measurement noise.
  • Institutions retain enough capacity to convert improved measurement into durable social change.
  • Work and family norms remain systemically decisive after cognitive automation erodes the wage–consumption circuit.

Social Function

This is a partial truth packaged as prestige signaling and transition management. It exposes a real defect in conventional measurement and gives institutions a better instrument for diagnosing cultural lag. It becomes ideological anesthetic only when that diagnostic refinement is mistaken for structural repair.

The Verdict

The paper is methodologically useful and strategically subordinate. It proves that gender neutrality is overstated; it does not challenge the Discontinuity Thesis. The terminal divide is not man versus woman but Sovereign versus Servitor versus economically disposable human. Better surveys cannot reverse P1, overcome P2, or prevent P3. This is a sharper thermometer for social attitudes, not a treatment for the economic organ failure.
