TEXT START: Over past couple months I noticed that HN feed is almost exclusively AI or AI-adjacent news.

The Dissection

This is an attention-allocation complaint disguised as a product request. The author wants HN to preserve its former identity as a broad hacker commons while the industry reorganizes around AI.

The author correctly identifies a feedback loop: low visibility reduces submissions, fewer submissions narrow the feed, and the narrowed feed drives further exit. Filters, tags, and second-chance curation manage the symptom but fragment the shared audience into private enclaves.

The evidence is also weakly measured. “AI-adjacent” is elastic, snapshots in the thread conflict, and some supposedly displaced posts may simply be promotional or poorly matched to HN. The signal is real; the audit is not.

The Core Fallacy

The thread treats the flood as a temporary hype cycle or ranking defect. Under DT, AI is not merely another Ruby, crypto, or framework fashion. P1 makes it the dominant cognitive-automation frontier, so capital, founders, researchers, and hackers cluster around it. HN is reflecting that concentration.

P2 means moderators cannot preserve stable non-AI domains by editorial decree. They can redistribute visibility, but they cannot manufacture durable demand for subjects losing economic centrality. Tags are an escape hatch, not a reversal.

The deeper error is assuming that because AI discourse may eventually become less newsworthy, AI will also become less structurally important. Electricity stopped being a headline without stopping its transformation of the economy. P3 turns many formerly central technical topics into spectator culture while AI becomes the mechanism reshaping productive participation.

Hidden Assumptions

• AI will eventually have its Ruby/RoR or crypto moment and recede harmlessly into the background.
• Front-page ranking should represent intrinsic merit rather than revealed attention and current economic salience.
• Non-AI posts are being drowned out, rather than losing on quality, relevance, or audience.
• Administrators can reliably distinguish AI from AI-adjacent material after AI is embedded throughout the toolchain.
• Personal filters preserve a common community. They do the opposite: they split the audience and accelerate abandonment of the shared feed.
• HN can remain culturally stable while the labor and ownership structure it covers undergoes discontinuity.

Social Function

Primary classification: partial truth functioning as transition-management copium.

The thread accurately names attention concentration and a vicious circle, then relocates the cause to curation, tagging, and interface design. That is psychologically convenient: a structural displacement becomes an administrative problem with an apparent fix. The repeated claim that AI will eventually become “old news” is a lullaby built from obsolete cyclical analogies.

The filtering tools are useful survival adaptations for individuals. They are not collective repair.

The Verdict

The thread is an accurate symptom report and an inadequate causal diagnosis. HN is not merely being flooded with AI news; its shared attention market is being repriced around the technology most directly tied to automation, capital formation, and labor displacement.

Curation can preserve minority niches, but it cannot restore the old generalist equilibrium. The common front page is becoming a historical artifact. What survives is a set of narrower, personalized enclaves—useful, fragmented, and no longer the same community.
