Hidden Assumptions

• Awareness will allow democratic institutions to restrain capital. Under competitive firms and states, awareness does not solve coordination impossibility.

• The open web can remain open while its data and attention are freely extracted by systems optimized for scale. That is not a sustainable community model; it is unpaid substrate for private accumulation.

• Artists are an exceptional casualty. They are an early and visible case of a general process that reaches software, analysis, administration, and other cognitive work.

• More code, images, and music automatically means more social value. Abundance can increase output while destroying scarcity rents, trust, attention, and human leverage.

• Democratic state power remains an effective counterweight to concentrated AI ownership. Even redistribution would preserve consumption without restoring productive participation.

• Human authorship remains a sufficient economic defense. The final disclaimer about typing every word personally exposes the anxiety: provenance is being used as a legitimacy credential while the market is being flooded with cheap substitutes.

Social Function

Classification: partial truth, transition management, and ideological anesthetic.

The essay is a truthful transition diary. It permits the author to acknowledge dread, anger, and grief without converting those emotions into a power analysis or a survival position. Politics becomes a complaint, extinction becomes an intuition, and personal productivity becomes the emotional counterweight. The result is emotionally honest but strategically incomplete.

The piece also performs a small act of self-exoneration: it frames participation in the AI economy as fascination with discovery rather than participation in the ownership structure accelerating displacement. That framing is understandable. It is also irrelevant to the machinery.

The Verdict

This is a competent emotional smoke alarm, not a collapse model. It correctly senses that AI is exhilarating at the level of capability and bleak at the level of society, but it misses why: private control of cognitive automation severs the wage-to-consumption circuit and concentrates the remaining productive power in Sovereigns.

The good does not outweigh the bad under DT logic. The good is real as capability, convenience, and private creative reach. The bad is systemic: the majority can become economically unnecessary while transfers preserve only their consumption. More artifacts, more discovery, and more personal output can coexist with less human agency. That is not an unfortunate side effect of the transition. It is the transition’s central mechanism.
