I. WHAT THIS IS

The Verdict: Infrastructure for AI agents, built by humans who have already accepted their own obsolescence as the baseline condition of their new careers.

This is a cloud compute layer that lets Claude Code and Codex agents run in the cloud instead of parasitizing a local machine. Two ex-Gem engineers, who spent a year coding "almost exclusively" through AI agents, built a business serving those agents as the primary end user.

The humans are no longer the developer. They are the landlord.

II. THE KILL MECHANISM

What this accelerates:

1. Decoupling AI agents from local hardware constraints. Localhost is a bottleneck — limited RAM, local file system, device dependency. Cloud-based agents can scale, persist, operate asynchronously. This accelerates the AI productivity differential that is murdering the human coding labor market.

V. THE HIDDEN ASSUMPTION SMUGGLED IN

The post frames this as a human convenience story — "ditch localhost" sounds like it's about developer experience. But the actual pitch is: "Give AI agents their own cloud computers."

The hidden assumption: The limiting factor on AI coding quality is the local compute environment, not the human oversight of it. This is almost certainly true. But it also confirms the human's role has been reduced to plumbing.

VI. THE SOCIAL FUNCTION

Copium with a revenue model. The "exhilarating" framing is the tell. For most engineers, watching AI write their job is not exhilarating. It is terrifying. The founders are performing the only survivable emotional register: embrace the displacement, extract value during the transition, and call it exhilaration.

VII. VERDICT

Structural Reality: Boxes.dev is a well-positioned transition intermediation business serving the entity class (AI agents) that is displacing its own builders. They know this. They are optimizing for that reality.

Survival Plan for Founders: Sovereign (own the infra, accumulate capital from AI agent usage fees, reinvest into asset-dense positions — energy, data, compute) — this is what they are attempting.

Survival Plan for the Rest of the Coding Market: You are not the target customer. You are the legacy system being deprecated. If you use Boxes.dev, you are renting cloud compute for your replacement. Understand what you are doing when you pay for it.

Bottom Line: This is a good business built by sharp people on the corpse of their own profession. It is not a sign of a healthy coding market. It is a sign of its autopsy in progress.
