The next chapter of our AI momentum

TEXT START: Today, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai shared some changes with Google DeepMind teams, including new roles for Demis Hassabis and Koray Kavukcuoglu.

THE DISSECTION

This is a succession memo disguised as a momentum report. It performs three functions: it recasts Demis Hassabis’s withdrawal from day-to-day operations as strategic elevation; presents adoption figures, talent, compute, and infrastructure as proof of inevitable dominance; and gives AGI development a moral halo through appeals to humanity, discovery, health, and cancer cures.

The Jeff Dean–Sanjay Ghemawat announcement is framed as independence, but the stated investment, Cloud partnership, and research collaboration preserve Alphabet’s strategic access while distributing risk and optionality. The entire document converts concentration of AI power into a reassuring story about progress.

THE CORE FALLACY

The text confuses control of the automation engine with preservation of the economic system that engine is dismantling. Under P1, superior AI automates cognitive work. Under P2, institutions cannot reliably reserve large human-only domains. Under P3, most people lose access to economically necessary labor.

The article celebrates more capable models, broader deployment, and faster organizational execution, then treats that acceleration as evidence of a better future. It is evidence of substitution and concentration. A full-stack company may become a Sovereign under the Discontinuity Thesis; that does not preserve the mass employment-to-wage-to-consumption circuit. Usage, downloads, and scientific breakthroughs do not answer the ownership, distribution, or human participation problem.

HIDDEN ASSUMPTIONS

• “Momentum” means durable dominance rather than a temporary lead.
• User counts and downloads represent durable economic value rather than attention, subsidy, or dependence.
• More capable AI will expand prosperity without destroying the labor base that distributes purchasing power.
• A small executive and scientific class can shape AGI’s consequences despite competitive deployment pressures.
• Alphabet can retain control of the full stack without being constrained by energy, logistics, maintenance, regulation, or rival systems.
• Employees, developers, businesses, and the public will accept accelerating automation without destabilizing resistance.
• Corporate success and humanity’s interest remain aligned as ownership of productive intelligence concentrates.
• The promised medical benefits can legitimize the broader system regardless of who owns its gains.

SOCIAL FUNCTION

Primary classification: transition management. Secondary classifications: prestige signaling, elite self-exoneration, ideological anesthetic, corporate propaganda, and partial truth.

This is not pure copium. Within its own account, the text describes real organizational assets and accelerating deployment. The deception lies in the interpretation: structural displacement is narrated as universal progress, while the distributional consequences disappear from view. The document prepares employees, investors, and the public to regard elite control of AGI as competent stewardship rather than an ownership transition.

THE VERDICT

This is a polished announcement from the emerging Sovereign class. It may accurately describe Alphabet consolidating AI power and reallocating its highest-value operators. It does not demonstrate a safe new age, durable human productive participation, or survival of post-WWII capitalism. Under the Discontinuity Thesis, the document is evidence of P1 accelerating toward P2 and P3. The corporation may survive and strengthen; the labor order it is automating is the carcass beneath the press release.
