THE CORE FALLACY

It confuses interface-level privacy with control of the underlying information substrate. Proxying can reduce tracking and bandwidth, but X still controls the source, account graph, availability, and upstream rules. Open source and AGPL licensing cannot prevent API closure, throttling, legal pressure, hosting costs, or maintainer exhaustion. Under DT logic, XCancel is a transition intermediary and privacy niche—not a Sovereign, and not an indispensable Servitor.

HIDDEN ASSUMPTIONS

• X will preserve durable anonymous read access.
• The unofficial API will remain stable and usable.
• Donations will cover infrastructure, legal exposure, and maintenance.
• Community instances will provide reliable redundancy.
• Users will accept limited functionality in exchange for privacy.
• A cleaner interface changes the power relationship. It does not.

SOCIAL FUNCTION

Partial truth with a transition-management and ideological-anesthetic function. The surveillance and performance problems are real, and the workaround is useful. But the feature list, donation appeals, and promised account system imply institutional durability where there is only an exposed intermediary. It gives users edge-level privacy leverage, not ownership, productive participation, or bargaining power.

THE VERDICT

XCancel is a valid lag defense and a small transition niche. It does not reverse platform centralization or escape obsolescence dynamics. Its return is a reprieve granted by the system it does not control. Under DT, it is useful but structurally fragile: carcass management around a dominant platform, with a short half-life unless it migrates to infrastructure and protocols it actually controls.
